How Long Does Flooring Installation Take?

Most laminate or click vinyl flooring in an average room can be installed in one day once the room and subfloor are ready. Larger rooms, sheet vinyl, tiled floors or floors that need existing coverings removed or levelling will take longer.

Some flooring needs time to acclimatise in the room before it is fitted. Tiled floors also need time for the adhesive and grout to set before normal use. We will allow for this when we give you the expected schedule.

What to Expect When We Install Your Flooring

Before anything is laid, the existing floor needs to be checked and the details agreed. We look at the condition of the subfloor, how the new flooring will meet adjoining rooms and whether doors, skirting boards or fixed units will affect the fitting. This helps avoid problems once work is under way.

We check the room and existing floor

We measure the room and inspect the surface beneath the current flooring. Any movement, uneven areas, damp or damaged boards need to be identified before the new floor is laid. We will explain if preparation or repair work should be added to the quote.

Old flooring is removed if agreed

Existing flooring can be lifted and removed where this has been included in the work. We check what is underneath as it comes up, rather than assuming the subfloor will be ready. If we find unexpected damage, we will show you before carrying out additional work.

The subfloor is prepared

A floor needs a sound, clean and reasonably level base. Depending on its condition and the flooring being fitted, preparation may include securing loose boards, filling small gaps, fitting suitable boards or applying a levelling compound.

The layout is planned before fitting

We work out the direction and position of the flooring before cutting begins, taking account of the room shape, doorways and visible edges. The product is also checked for any fitting or acclimatisation instructions supplied by the manufacturer.

The flooring is fitted carefully

Laminate, vinyl or tiles are fitted using the method intended for that product. This may involve underlay, a click fitting system, adhesive or grout. Required gaps and joints are allowed for so the finished floor can perform as it should.

Edges, thresholds and doors are finished

Once the main floor is laid, we complete the edges and fit any agreed beading, thresholds or trims. Doors can be adjusted if the new floor changes the clearance beneath them. We clear away offcuts and leave the room tidy when the work is complete.

Other Jobs We Can Complete Alongside Flooring Installation

Flooring often forms part of a wider room update. The old floor may need lifting, walls may need repairing or doors and skirting boards may need adjusting once the new level is known. We can include these jobs in the same quote and arrange them in the right order.

We can also help with:

Tell us about the complete room when you enquire, not just the flooring. We can check which jobs should be completed first and make sure the new floor is not damaged by work that could have been done beforehand.

Customer Testimonals

Absolutely fantastic service!

We had a bathroom repair requiring wiring, plastering, redecorating and studwork. Khal worked incredibly hard, made good and even salvaged existing tiles and quartz to reinstall. We were delighted and would absolutely turn to Surrey Handyman again for small building works.

A great job rebuilding our border wall

Darius made excellent work of rebuilding a collapsed brick border around a concrete slab being readied for a patio. He assessed the job, sourced the materials and completed the work diligently and on budget.

How We Make It Easy

Flooring Installation FAQs

We install laminate, vinyl and tiled flooring in individual rooms and smaller areas. The exact fitting method depends on the product, the room and the condition of the floor beneath it, so please send us the product details when you enquire.

Not necessarily, but we need to know what type of flooring you want before the work can be quoted accurately. If you have already chosen it, send us the product name, pack size and fitting instructions. We will also confirm whether you or Surrey Handyman will supply the other materials.

Yes, removal and disposal can be included in the quote. The work involved depends on whether the existing floor is carpet, laminate, vinyl, tiles or another material. If old tiles or adhesive may contain asbestos, testing may be needed before they are disturbed.

Yes, the room should be cleared as far as possible before fitting begins. Small items and furniture need to be removed, and we will discuss any large or fixed pieces that cannot easily be moved.

The subfloor needs to be sound, clean and level enough for the chosen flooring. Small defects can often be corrected during preparation, but loose boards, larger dips or damaged areas may require additional work before fitting can begin.

Sometimes, but only if the existing surface is stable, level and suitable for the new product. Laying over a poor surface can create movement, uneven joints or problems at doorways, so we will inspect it before recommending this approach.

Yes. The plaster will be left ready for decorating once it has dried. Painting can also be included in the quote if you would prefer us to complete the finished surface.

Yes. We can fit suitable vinyl, laminate or tiled flooring in kitchens and bathrooms. The product must be designed for the room and its expected moisture levels, so this should be checked before it is purchased.

It can be if the flooring, underlay and heating system are compatible. We will need the specifications for both the flooring and the heating system so the manufacturer’s temperature limits and fitting instructions can be followed.

Not always. Flooring can sometimes be finished with beading or suitable edge trim instead, in some instances the skirting board can also be cut in place and the flooring pushed under. Removing and refitting the skirting boards can give a cleaner edge, but it involves more work and may require some making good or decorating afterwards.

This depends on the material and fitting method. Many click fitted laminate and vinyl floors can be used soon after installation, while adhesive, grout or other finishes need time to set. We will tell you when the floor is ready for normal use.
