Time

How Long Does Hall, Stairs and Landing Decorating Take?

A staircase has more edges, corners and difficult access than a straightforward room. The time depends on the number of levels, the condition of the surfaces and how much woodwork is included. Stripping a failed finish or painting individual spindles adds considerably more work than repainting walls alone.

The job needs to be planned around drying between coats and access to upstairs rooms. We will explain the expected duration and when sections of the hall or stairs need to be kept clear.

How much does hall, stairs and landing decorating cost?

There is no VAT applicable to our published rates. However, in some cases we may need to use VAT-registered providers,
in which case VAT will be applied where applicable. We will always notify you at the time of booking if this applies.

What to Expect When We Decorate Halls and Stairs

We start by checking how the high sections can be reached and which surfaces need preparation. The work is then planned so walls, ceilings and woodwork can be decorated safely, with protection for the staircase and surrounding floors.

We check the height and access

We assess the stairwell, landing edges and changes in ceiling height before starting. Suitable access equipment is needed for areas above the stairs. This is taken into account when the job is quoted and the work is planned.

The stairs and flooring are protected

Carpets, hard flooring and nearby fittings are covered before preparation or painting begins. Hallway furniture, pictures and small items should be cleared from the work area. We discuss how equipment and coverings will affect use of the stairs.

Damaged surfaces are prepared

Small holes, scuffs and minor cracks are filled and smoothed. Loose paint is removed and areas needing sanding are prepared. More extensive plaster damage or recurring cracks are checked before decorating so the cause is not simply covered over.

Woodwork is prepared separately

Doors, frames, skirting, handrails and spindles need preparation suited to their existing finish. Painted and varnished timber may need different treatment. We prepare the items included in the job so the new coating can adhere properly.

The walls and woodwork are painted

We apply the chosen finishes, taking care around door frames, edges and detailed staircase components. Drying time is allowed between coats, and work on frequently used surfaces such as handrails is planned with household access in mind.

We check the finished areas

We inspect the painted surfaces and tidy the work area when decorating is complete. We will explain when handrails, doors and other surfaces are ready for normal use, including any care needed while the new finish hardens.

Other Work We Can Complete Alongside Hallway Decorating

Decorating a hallway is often a good time to deal with the smaller repairs that have built up around it. We can plan these before painting or arrange finishing jobs once the surfaces are ready.

We can also help with:

If other work is planned, such as new flooring or electrical changes, tell us before booking. We can discuss the order so newly decorated surfaces are not unnecessarily disturbed afterwards.

Customer Testimonals

Very pleased with decorating job. The quality was excellent and the decorator worked efficiently to get the job done in good time. Turned up when they said they would and they were happy to rearrange at short notice when we had a family illness.

Ben did a great job of checking for all possible electrical problems behind the oven and in the fuse box. He explained everything clearly and cleared up afterwards. Very happy with his professionalism.

Really handy services. Needed help from a gas safe engineer as well as an electrician for a combined job and it was handy that both could be booked for me in the same time via the booking office. Both Ben and Colin did a great job!

How We Make It Easy

Hall, Stairs and Landing Decorating FAQs

We assess the height and layout before agreeing the work. Stairwells need suitable access equipment, and a visit may be necessary to establish how the upper walls and ceiling can be reached.

Yes, these can be included. Detailed staircase woodwork takes time to prepare and paint, so please show it in your photos and tell us whether the existing finish is painted, varnished or bare timber.

Yes. The staircase and surrounding floors are protected during the work. Please tell us about any newly fitted or particularly delicate flooring when booking.

There may be periods when access is restricted by equipment, preparation or wet paint. We discuss this before starting so you know when the stairs need to be kept clear and can plan around it.

They are included when listed in the quote. Tell us which doors, frames, skirting boards and staircase components you want painted so the full amount of preparation and decorating is allowed for.

It may be possible, but the existing finish needs preparing and a suitable coating system must be used. Painting straight onto a smooth varnished surface can lead to poor adhesion. We check the timber before advising.

A durable finish that can cope with regular marks and cleaning is often useful. The choice depends on the surface and the appearance you want. We can discuss suitable products and your preferred colours.

Minor filling can be included. Larger cracks, loose plaster or cracks that repeatedly return need checking first, as decorating will not resolve an underlying problem.

It is often practical to complete the messy preparation and painting first, but the sequence depends on the other work involved. Tell us your flooring plans so the jobs can be coordinated and the new finish protected.
