How Long Does Outdoor Lighting Installation Take?
Changing an outdoor bulb usually takes between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on access and the type of fitting. Replacing a standard outdoor light fitting typically takes between 25 and 40 minutes when the existing wiring is already in place.
Some outdoor lighting jobs are more involved. If new cables need to be run, fittings are being moved to a new position, or multiple lights are being installed, the work can take longer. Your handyman will assess what is required on arrival and allow the right amount of time to complete the job safely, making sure all wiring is secure and suitable for outdoor use.

What to Expect When We Install Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting installation is about making sure fittings are installed safely, wired correctly and suitable for long term outdoor use. When your Surrey Handyman arrives, he will assess the location, check the existing wiring and confirm the best way to carry out the work for a secure and reliable result.
Checking the existing wiring and supply
We start by checking the current wiring and power supply to make sure it is suitable for the new light or fitting. If you are replacing an existing light, this is usually straightforward. Where the wiring is older or unclear, we take extra care to confirm everything is safe before fitting.
Assessing the fitting and location
Outdoor lights need to be positioned correctly for both practical use and weather exposure. We check the mounting surface, height and direction of the light to make sure it works as intended and is fixed securely.
Running or adjusting cables where needed
Some outdoor lighting jobs require new cables to be run or existing cables to be extended. We plan cable routes carefully, keeping them neat, protected and suitable for outdoor conditions.
Fitting suitable outdoor rated lights
All outdoor lights must be rated for external use. We make sure fittings are appropriate for the location, properly sealed and fixed securely to prevent water ingress or movement.
Testing the light and operation
Once installed, we test the light to make sure it works correctly. This includes checking switches, sensors or timers if fitted, and confirming the light operates as expected.
A tidy finish
After installation and testing, we clean the area, remove any old fittings or packaging and leave the space tidy. You are welcome to check the light position and operation before we leave and ask for any small adjustments if needed.
